HRT vs Natural Remedies: What’s Right for You?

Menopause isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey – and neither is the way it can be managed. For some women, Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can be life-changing. For others, natural remedies offer the gentle support they need.

So how do you decide what’s right for you?

As a Nutritionist who supports women in perimenopause, menopause, and beyond, I’ve had these conversations countless times – with women just like you. Women who are tired of the guesswork and just want to feel like themselves again.

What is HRT?

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) involves taking oestrogen, often combined with progesterone, to replace the hormones your body stops making during menopause. It can come in patches, gels, tablets, or vaginal treatments.

Benefits of HRT may include:

  • Relief from hot flushes and night sweats

  • Improved sleep and mood

  • Protection for bones (reduced risk of osteoporosis)

  • May help with brain fog, vaginal dryness, and joint pain

Potential drawbacks:

  • It’s not suitable for everyone (especially with certain health conditions)

  • Some women experience side-effects like bloating or breast tenderness

What are Natural Remedies for Menopause?

Natural remedies refer to lifestyle changes, nutrition, supplements, herbal treatments and mind–body practices that support hormonal balance without the use of hormones.

 Popular natural menopause remedies:

  • Dietary tweaks (e.g. blood sugar balance, phytoestrogens like flaxseeds, and anti-inflammatory foods)

  • Supplements (e.g. magnesium, B vitamins, omega-3s, and adaptogenic herbs such as ashwagandha or maca)

  • Mind–body practices (e.g. yoga, breathwork and meditation)

  • Lifestyle habits (e.g. regular movement, sleep hygiene and stress support)

So … HRT or Natural Remedies?

Here’s the thing: there’s no gold medal for choosing one over the other.

What matters most is:

  • Your individual symptoms

  • Your medical history

  • Your personal beliefs and comfort level

I have a lot of clients who are taking HRT, and I work on nutrition and lifestyle support alongside it. It’s important to note that HRT isn’t a “magic pill” that cures everything! Even with HRT, you will still need to work on your nutrition and lifestyle habits to get the best results.

I have other clients who aren’t on HRT for whatever reason, and we work on managing their symptoms effectively with natural methods alone.

The best choice? The one that makes you feel supported, heard, and like yourself again.

A Gentle Nudge: You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the choices – or unsure what will work for your unique body – I see you. I’ve been there myself. And I help women like you every day.

In my signature, 1-to-1 programme, The FREEDOM Method, we explore all the options, look at what’s happening in your body, and create a plan that fits you – whether that includes HRT, natural remedies, or both (please note that I cannot “prescribe” HRT, but I will ensure that you are fully informed of all your options that you can then discuss with your GP).
