Midlife Burnout: How to Spot It and What to Do Next
You’re Not Lazy – You’re Burned Out
If you're waking up tired, snapping at loved ones, struggling to focus or feeling like you've lost your spark, then please know this: you're not alone, and you're not failing. Burnout in midlife women is incredibly common, especially during perimenopause and menopause, when hormonal shifts add fuel to the fire.
Read on to see what midlife burnout looks like, why it happens, and what you can do to start feeling like yourself again.
What Is Midlife Burnout?
Midlife burnout is a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion, caused by prolonged stress. It can often be brought on by a mix of work pressure, caring for others, hormonal changes, and feeling like you're juggling too many balls in the air.
For women between 40 and 60, burnout can be harder to spot because it overlaps with perimenopause or menopause symptoms, such as fatigue, brain fog, sleep issues and mood swings. It’s like a perfect storm.
5 Common Symptoms of Burnout in Midlife Women
If you’re not sure whether what you’re feeling is just “life” or something more, here are some red flags to watch out for.
Chronic Fatigue
You feel tired all the time, even after a full night’s sleep. Everything feels like an effort.Emotional Numbness or Overwhelm
You swing between feeling nothing at all and everything too much. Tears come easily, or not at all.Irritability and Low Patience
Snapping at your partner, kids or colleagues over small things? You're not alone.Brain Fog and Forgetfulness
Can’t concentrate? Losing words mid-sentence? Burnout and hormonal changes both affect cognition.Loss of Motivation or Joy
The things you used to enjoy now feel flat, or even like a burden. It’s hard to care about anything.
These are signs your body and mind are waving the white flag.
Why Does Burnout Hit Harder in Midlife?
There’s no one cause, but here’s why burnout is common in this season of life.
Hormonal shifts in perimenopause and menopause affect mood, energy and resilience.
Many women are in the sandwich generation – caring for children and ageing parents.
You may be juggling a career, running a household, and feeling the pressure to "do it all".
There’s often little time left for your own needs, especially rest and nourishment.
It’s no wonder so many midlife women feel stretched to breaking point.
How to Recover from Burnout (Without Quitting Everything)
If you're thinking, “Ok, that’s me, but what now?”, take a deep breath. There is a way forward.
Here’s where to start:
1. Acknowledge That You’re Burned Out
This isn’t weakness, it’s wisdom. Your body is asking for help. Listen.
2. Simplify Where You Can
Look at your day-to-day and ask, “What can I let go of?” Even one small change (like saying no to something) can be powerful.
3. Prioritise Rest and Recovery
Quality sleep, gentle movement, calming practices (like journaling or walks in nature) are not luxuries. They're medicine.
4. Nourish Your Body
Focus on whole foods, protein-rich meals and stabilising your blood sugar. Good nutrition is a powerful tool against burnout and hormonal imbalance.
5. Ask for Help
You don’t have to go it alone. Whether it’s a friend, therapist or menopause nutritionist (like me!), support can be the turning point.
